Challenges Facing Fire Service Administrators: Career Progression, Training, and the Political Landscape
Abstract
Fire service administrators are facing many challenges as the industry shifts and more focus is place on training and professional development for the fire service provider. In the past the career progression ladder to become a fire chief was a difficult and somewhat inconsistent. The problem was further noticed when fire officers were transferred from one station to the next often repeating and going through the same training they had already received. This problem was later addressed with the formation of the U.S Fire Administration (USFA) and the National Fire Academy.This research paper will look at the history of professional development within the career field and the changes made going further to ensure our officers have the right tools necessary to further advance their careers no matter what department they are assigned to.
